School History
Welcome to Magnolia Trace Elementary's web site.
Enjoy your visit as you learn about our school.
Magnolia Trace Elementary School was established in 1999 in Mandeville, Louisiana. It is located thirty miles north of New Orleans on Highway 1088. Our population has grown rapidly in the last several years. The students come from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds.
The school is in the process of splitting into two schools due to the large number of students. During the 2009-2010 school year students in Kindergarten and T-1 will attend our new sister school, Marigny Elementary. During the 2010-2011 school year our first grade classes will move to Marigny Elementary as well. Magnolia Trace will then be a 2nd and 3rd grade school only. Magnolia Trace is under the leadership of principal Melanie Edwards, and assistant principal Jeanne Turner. There are eleven regular first grade classes, ten second grade classes, and ten third grade classes. Special education services are offered through resource class teachers, inclusion, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physcal therapy, adaptive physical education, a motor room, gifted, and talented art, drama, and music. Music, art, library and physical education classes are taught on a weekly basis. The PTA provides additional art through a special artist in residence program and classroom teachers teach DBAE (Discipline Based Art Education) in the classrooms. Violin is offered to students whose parents agree to participate with them in a weekly lesson. A guidance counselor is available for many services during the school day, and a mental health provider is available to work with students and parents one day a week.
Our school complex consists of 55 classrooms, administrative offices, library, cafeteria, and a gymnasium. Our outdoor classroom includes a gazebo, greenhouse, garden shed, pond, butterfly garden, Louisiana garden, birding area, and an archaeological dig. Lessons are taught at each grade level in the outdoor classroom in gardening, pond and swamp life, birding, and archaeology.
The PTA plays a major role in supporting school activities and programs at MTE. A close working relationship between parents and staff provides wonderful benefits for our children. Many parent and grandparent volunteers provide valuable classroom assistance on a daily basis throughout the school year. Both the school and community work closely to accomplish our educational goals.
Many special events bring families to our school, such as our Sock Hop, Spaghetti Dinner and Art Auction, Field Day, Grandparents Week, Cultural Arts Day, Reading Counts Day, Talent Show, Spring Art Show, and Family Math and Reading Nights.
