Our Accelerated Reader theme this year is
“EVERY HERO HAS A STORY!”

The Accelerated Reader Program is a supplemental reading program to help develop students’ comprehension, fluency, and most importantly love for reading.  With teacher guidance and support, the program is designed to encourage, motivate, and challenge students to take ownership of their reading development.

Weekly book checkout alternates between an AR and free choice book.
Week A: Students will check out one AR book in their book level range.
Week B: Students will check out any book in the library that follows the five-finger rule.

Check the AR level of any book with an AR quiz at http://www.arbookfind.com.

Check your child’s progress at https://hosted316.renlearn.com/208992/HomeConnect/. You can track their average percent correct, points earned towards their teacher-assigned goals, and their book level. A detailed list of their quizzes taken and the scores earned are found under “My Bookshelf.”

Please remind your child that doing well is more important than taking a large number of quizzes. 85% or better average correct is required to earn most of the incentives in the AR program. Most students aren’t fazed by receiving a score of 60% or lower on their AR tests.  They just go find another book to read and try again.  Unfortunately, this practice promotes speed reading rather than reading for actual comprehension, which is one of our ultimate goals. Some tips to improve their score are listed below.

Read slowly and thoroughly.

Read the book twice.

Take the AR quiz as soon as possible after completing the book.

Take the right quiz!
Pay attention and use the quiz number found on the AR spine label of all MTE AR library books. Some students take the wrong quiz, the Spanish version of the quiz, or the Vocabulary Quiz instead of the Reading Practice quiz.

The AR program has five parts.

CLASS GOAL: SPIRIT STICK
Each week at morning meeting two classes from each grade will be chosen for showing the most improvement in AR. The line leader for the class will carry the spirit stick (aka Super Maggie) in the hallways all week.

SCHOOL GOAL:  20,000 POINTS FOR THE YEAR
The school goal is 20,000 points for the year. If the goal is met, the administration will be challenged to perform a silly task for the students. A little something extra will be awarded if the school-wide average correct is 85% or better.

INDIVIDUAL GOAL: 100% CORRECT ON AR QUIZZES
One entry earned for every 100% scored on an AR quiz. A prize is drawn each quarter.

INDIVIDUAL GOAL: INDIVIDUAL QUARTERLY POINT GOAL
The individual quarterly goal is set by the teacher. Students receive a prize from the librarian.
Example: John’s goal is to earn 6.8 points with at least 85% correct answers on his quizzes.

INDIVIDUAL GOAL: AR POINT CLUBS
